For those who may not be aware there is a draft bill (SB413) in the Nevada legislature to outlaw brothels sponsored by Senator Pat Spearman and Senator Joe Hardy. Here's the links to more info about it: https://www.leg.state.nv.us/App/NELIS/REL/80th2019/Bill/6753/Overview https://www.rgj.com/story/news/poli...am-bill-outlaw-legal-prostitution/3140764002/ Anyone who would like to send an opinion to the Nevada legislature can use this link: https://www.leg.state.nv.us/AppCF/Opinion/80th2019/vwComments.cfm You can also read the other opinions submitted. I sure hope this draft bill doesn't make it into law.
I added my two cents. I told them if they want to close the brothels, then they should go the next step and close the casinos, too. Let Nevada become a wasteland coz a few politicians, a crooked lawyer, and a crooked sheriff all have a hair across their butts. Watch that revenue dry up. Yes indeed, I’m against SB413.
It’s sad. The people of Lyon County have already spoken. It’s a waste of tax dollars for a campaign against all the brothels.... -Pure heart with a dirty mind, Randy Ryder
Exactly!! If the whole argument for a shutdown of the brothels is based upon an argument for morality, then they should closed down all the casinos because gambling is a sin just as much as marital affairs outside of a marriage. If I correctly remember my biblical history, I believe Jesus hung out with a prostitute, but publicly shunned money lenders and businessman who used the house of God as a place for wheeling and dealing their business matters. Hmm, think on that one for a moment.
I think they need to MYOB. I know for a fact that no one asked me if I was being exploited or trafficked. Just ridiculous. The whole sex trafficking and exploitation problem exists OUTSIDE the legal brothels. If they can't get that through their thick heads and my livelihood, love and passion in life is ripped from me, trust me, they can expect one of the biggest law suits in the history of Nevada. If they shut down my job and allow the 100's of massage parlors and the over 20,000 "massage therapist" licenses in Las Vegas to exist to shroud the truly trafficked people, they can expect one helluva fight from me. And THEN I will make sure the money trails of the supposed victim resource outfits are exposed for what they are too.
There's a moral panic in this country right now about "trafficking." It's become the "cool thing to be seen fighting." Dangerous for consensual sex workers. Folks who don't like sex work, or think it's "dirty," "immoral," etc, probably have never met a sex worker and, I bet, couldn't even conceive of a woman choosing to do sex work of her own free will. Although sex work may be a job a lot of folks could never imagine themselves doing, we should respect the fact that there are women (and men) who do reap its rewards while handling the physical and emotional demands of the job successfully. Dr. Barbara Brents of UNLV had a great an op-ed media article in late 2018 with the following quote: "For the majority of sex workers, selling sex is as consensual as any other service labor. At the same time, they are among the most marginalized, vulnerable and stigmatized groups of people. The key is the conditions under which they sell sexual services. Selling sex can be safe, healthy and profitable if individuals have protection from the law and the ability to redress abuses."
It would damage Nevada. You would still have illegal prostitution. But they don't mind people losing millions to gambling. Smh
Thank you to all who provided feedback to the Nevada legislature. As of today SB413 is dead! Here's the link to the latest news on this: https://thenevadaindependent.com/ar...on-death-penalty-and-prostitution-prohibition
That sounds like good news, and thanks for passing it along. I hope the bill dies quietly in bureaucratic no-man's land. However, was disappointed (although not surprised) to see Pat Spearman's objection to SB413 was that she wants the Nordic Model instead (criminalizing sex buyers only).
Lovely how going to a brothel, a safe, STI free place, is more looked down upon than meeting some chick at the bar and having unprotected sex, resulting in STI’s, an unplanned pregnancy, and other types of heartbreak. That once happened to my cousin.
If you want a laugh, here’s the chick that claimed to be trafficked, and hired Guinasso to do another Wiley Coyote fall off a cliff. Pimp that pizza, lady!
Meanwhile, a measure to ban prostitution failed to gain traction this session. Republican Sen. Joe Hardy became the lone sponsor of SB413 last week when Democratic co-sponsor Sen. Pat Spearman withdrew — she wanted a “Nordic model” in which only the buyers of prostitution face consequences, and Hardy wanted a more complete ban. “There’s not an appetite to go out on a plank with me,” Hardy said.
