[smilie=hi ya!.gif]January is the first month of the Gregorian calendar. It was named after Janus, the Roman god of all beginnings. January replaced March as the first month of the Roman year no later than 153 BCE.

:)Although a rich religious tradition had existed long before the arrival of the Greeks, the pantheon of Greek gods quickly merged with those already present. However, there was one god with no Greek counterpart -- one who symbolized both beginning and end. His name was evoked even before that of Jupiter. His name was Janus.

[smilie=i love you1.gif]The Romans regarded Janus as an important god, which is evident in one of his titles, divom deus, which means ‘the god’s god’. Before a sacrifice could be made to any of the other deities , Janus would first be invoked and a libation be poured for him. The rationale for this is that since Janus was the doorkeeper to the heavens, it was through him that all the other gods and goddesses may be reached.

  2. Austin, Is it because of Janus we have a saying about facing both ways.

  3. “As if reading and writing English is not difficult enough, the language includes a number of words with opposite meanings within themselves. These are often called Janus words, after Janus, the Roman god of doors and beginnings. (January, the first month of the year, is named for him.) Janus usually was represented in art as having two bearded faces that faced in opposite directions, as do doors — and as do Janus words.”
