Dark Blue. The great Kurt Russel plays a corrupt cop in Los Angeles right before, and during, the Rodney King riots, who is trying to solve a multiple-murder on the one hand, while trying to stay out of trouble on the other. "That's Eldon Perry the third. Right there next to his mom. He will never be a cop - he hates cops. I love him and I... I thank God that I was just too busy to pass on to him what my granddaddy passed on to my daddy and my daddy passed on to me: I was raised up to be a gunfighter by a family of gunfighters." ~ Det. Sgt. Eldon Perry, Jr.
Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare - I still love this entire series, and I'm still bitter about the remake of the original Nightmare lol
The Gate. This was a pretty good horror movie, especially if you're a kid. It had some legitimate scares in it, particularly when you think the kids' parents have come home to help them, only to find out that the "parents" are, in fact, doppelgangers, and aren't going to help anyone. Also, unlike most horror movies of the time, when the kids' house is destroyed, it stays that way. No magical Cat in the Hat-type fixes in this flick! The monster animation was good, too.
Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects. While not Charles Bronson's best movie by any means, he still turned in a rock solid performance in this cop flick about a detective (Crowe) trying to shut down a sex trafficking ring dealing exclusively in underage girls. "I'd like to shove this up your ass, but I don't want to dirty my hands." ~ Lt. Crowe
Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III this third installment of the Chainsaw series is packed with cheesy gore and hammy acting …………………………………………………..
Mintority Report. Based on a Philip K. Dick story, this near-future sci-fi movie involves the conviction of defendants who have committed no crime, but will, according to a triumvirate of precognitives. While the system itself is flawless, human error, and evil, infect it, with unfortunate consequences for Cptn. John Anderton, played by Tom Cruise. One of my favorite actors, Max von Sydow, co-stars. "You see the dilemma, don't you? If you don't kill me, precogs were wrong and precrime is over. If you do kill me, you go away, but it proves the system works. The precogs were right. So, what are you going to do now? What's it worth? Just one more murder? You'll rot in hell with a halo, but people will still believe in precrime. All you have to do is kill me, like they said you would. Except you know your own future, which means you can change it if you want to. You still have a choice, Lamar. Like I did." ~ Cptn, John Anderton
Nick Of Time - underrated thriller starring Johnny Depp, whose character is conned into an assassination plot of a politician. Christopher Walken turns in his usual excellent performance as the menacing Mr Smith.
Prince of Darkness. One of my favorite horror movies, by one of my favorite directors. There's a lot going on in this movie: celestial events cause a mysterious, two-million-year-old liquid to begin to coalesce into some kind of organism, there's a message sent from the future to warn people in the present, there's an overarching question about the nature of God and religion, there's love, there's running jokes, there's walking dead, there's even Alice Cooper! For fellow John Carpenter fans, a couple of Big Trouble in Little China actors have significant roles, as does Donald Pleasence. It's a shame no-one ever watches this movie, because it's really quite good. "Suppose what your faith has said is essentially correct. Suppose there is a universal mind controlling everything, a god willing the behavior of every subatomic particle. Well, every particle has an anti-particle, its mirror image, its negative side. Maybe this universal mind resides in the mirror image instead of in our universe as we wanted to believe. Maybe he's anti-god, bringing darkness instead of light." ~ Prof. Edward Birack
Sleepy Hollow. Tim Burton's movie version of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, starts Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane, in this case a detective rather than a school teacher, and Christina Ricci. Fans of Star Wars and Deadwood will recognize some of the supporting cast. "The Horseman comes, and tonight he comes for you." ~ Lady van Tassel
Upgrade. This was a pretty decent cyberpunk-ish sci-fi movie dealing with the potential evils of artificially improving human beings. It was pretty violent in some parts, so if that doesn't bother you, it's worth checking out. "While I am state of the art, I am not a ninja." ~ STEM
Alien. Ridley Scott's 1979 excellent sci-fi/horror movie introduced the world to H.R. Giger's pretty much perfect titular creature, and launched a franchise that still exists today. "You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? It is the perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility." ~ Ash
