Just a friendly neighborhood announcement to all the ladies and gents of he board. This week is National Corrections Officers week. We are the unsung heroes of Law Enforcement doing a job most cannot do. We are only armed with our compassion, a pen and words. May 5-11,2019

I know some may have bad experiences with the jail/prison system but take a moment if you know a correctional officer to thank them for their service.

"Correctional officers and other treatment and support staff put themselves in harm’s way to advance a mission of protecting the public, staff and inmates, while at the same time helping offenders to change their behavior to become better human beings. The task of returning individuals back to their communities better than when they left becomes more of a daunting challenge as departments are tasked with doing more for less. " Rusty Ringler

I myself work in what is called J Cell House we have on a given day 216 women on 3 floors. On my floor I oversee roughly about 88 women in Dormitory style setting. Their are no bars or gates between me and the offender. I currently am the 5 day officer on the Reception and Diagnostic Unit, this is the intake unit for those coming into the prison system the first time or those you have violated the terms of their parole.

The crimes these ladies have committed include: Rapists, Murders, Child Abusers, those with drug problems, occasionally we get those with mental health issues.

I have to be firm but compassionate and teach these ladies life in the prison system. I enforce the rules, try to change their behaviors and help them hopefully to become productive members of society. However, we have a few that will never see nor taste freedom again, they will be their until they pass away. Those I try to treat with fairness and compassion in hopes they have a moderately better life.

I am armed only with a radio, a pen, a pair of handcuffs and a suicide knife to cut those down who try to hang themselves. Other than that it is me against 88 ladies.

No prison is not like you see in the movies or tv shows and it sure as hell is nothing like The Orange is the New Black.

So ladies and gents if you know a correctional officer please thank them for their service.

Thank you for taking time to read this...
