Jay Mariotti: When an ordeal stretches beyond the absurd, when the mere mention of a
name causes more American cringing than a Mini-Me sex tape, the
impossible becomes possible. The minute Brett Favre suggested he'd like
to play for the Vikings or Bears, Halas Hall should have been on the
case faster than flies on you-know-what. The minute the Packers
acknowledged such a trade as a ``last resort'' resolution, Jerry Angelo
should have been plotting.
White Sox manager Ken Williams spent a good part of the previous
20-some hours listening to criticism of his trade for Ken Griffey Jr.,
then defiantly shrugging off his detractors. He spent about three hours
Friday watching Griffey in the lineup with nothing but a smile on his
face.
The magic number for the Pittsburgh Pirates might be 2010, a year when
the young talent the Bucs have acquired in the last two weeks might gel
enough to make them contenders. Among the eight players who have come
in exchange for pitcher Damaso Marte and slugger Jason Bay is Jeff
Karstens, a right-handed pitcher from the New York Yankees who was 3-5
in parts of two seasons in the majors but at 25 is considered an arm
for the future.
Elizabeth Castro is finding it hard to make ends meet in the face of
higher gas and food prices. Castro has turned to a summer program to
help relieve some of the strain on her food budget.

kids prefer cable, Wii games and computers, prompting a growing army of
naturalists to sound the battle cry "Leave No Child Inside!" "One of
the greatest gifts we can give to kids is a love of nature and the
freedom to explore," said Melinda Pruett-Jones, executive director of
Chicago Wilderness, a consortium of some 230 Midwest organizations
dedicated to study, protect and restore natural areas.

United Air Lines said Friday it has reached an agreement with the
pilot's union to limit what the company calls work slowdowns that
forced cancellation of hundreds of flights and cost millions of
dollars. Neither the airline nor the union disclosed specifics of the
agreement, which was worked out behind closed doors and is to be in
effect pending Aug. 27-28 hearings on a federal lawsuit seeking a
preliminary injunction.
