With nearly 200 videos to her
credit in 11 years, Sunset Thomas has well earned her place in
the AVN Hall of Fame. "A lot of my movies have won
awards, but I never got a trophy until now," she says. "It's a
great honor, and I'm happy to make it in there with all of
these wonderful stars."
Born in
Sikeston, Missouri ("the 'Show Me' state," she laughs) the 5'
8" blonde vixen grew up in a number of Southern-accented
states. "After my mother had me, she left my real father, and
we took off," she explains. "I lived in Virginia, Georgia,
Florida, Texas, and Tennessee. My mother was dating a guy who
was a truck driver, so we did a lot of traveling."
While living in Florida, she met
her future manager Zach Adams; the two soon married and
decided to move out to California. "We came out to L.A. along
with my best friend and her boyfriend who was in a Christian
band," she relates. "We were just struggling, eating peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches and sleeping on a mattress on the
floor. I started runway modeling, but I wasn't tall enough and
that really upset me. I did a couple of B movies, but they
paid 200 bucks and you had to work from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. The
jobs weren't coming in as much, and we did a lot of [sexual]
stuff in our private life, so we decided to try video - it's
good money."
A search of weekly
newspaper classifieds brought the 18-year-old Sunset to
producer Lance Kincaid, who arranged her adult debut in Mr.
Peepers Amateur Home Videos 25. "I told Lance that I'd
never done this before, and I don't know...,'" she recalls.
"He said, 'Try it, relax, and if you feel uncomfortable, let
me know.' He gave me a little vibrator and I started
masturbating in front of the camera, and right there, I was
like, 'This is the life for me.' The camera turned me on. I
didn't know that I had something like that in me, but I do."
Following the Mr. Peepers
epiphany, Sunset dedicated herself to her newfound profession
with abandon. Notable titles include Debbie Does Dallas
Again, Andrew Blake's Hidden Obsession, Cajun
Heat, Inferno, Jezebel, Sunset Strips, Unbridled and
Star Crossed. Asked for a favorite experience, she
says, "I'm proud of doing all the sex! I'd never done
it before, and I'll probably never do it again, but
Sunset's Gang Bang was such a turn on for me... none of
the guys had wood problems! It was so cool... All my hands
were busy, my feet were busy, both holes were busy; I loved
it!"
The actress also has kind
words for director Michael Ninn, who cast her in his
award-winning epics Sex, Latex and Sex 2. "I
love Michael," she says. "He's such a sweetheart and a good
friend. I used to hang out in the editing room when he was
doing Sex and watch him putting it together. That was a lot of
fun."
Three years ago, Sunset
became the very first featured porn starlet at the famed
Moonlite Bunnyranch brothel. "Ron Jeremy introduced me to
[Bunnyranch owner] Dennis Hof, and I asked him if he ever
thought about taking porn stars out there," she recalls. "He
didn't know if that would get him in trouble at first... He
called me back, we went to dinner, and we decided to do it.
It's all condoms, we're all protected. I don't see anything
wrong with it. I love being with my fans!"
Currently separated from Adams,
Thomas currently plans to relocate to Carson City, where she
will continue her work at the Bunnyranch by appointment. "I'm
going to get back in [to performing]," she adds. "I've been
out for a year; I had a little boy, who's five months old now
[October]. I'll do a couple of big films, and that's it. I
don't want to wear myself out."
In
the meantime, her niece Sunrise Adams has entered the biz, and
Aunt Sunset couldn't be prouder. Her advice to her niece
reflects her own attitude toward her life in porn: "If you're
going to do it, you need to enjoy it," She says. "If you're
just doing this for money it's going to show. Stay away from
drugs or drinking, and have a good, positive attitude." - Ben
