OK, I just checked the poll results. Two more folks have voted "yes" recently - as it, "yes, it's a sin."

You serious or just being silly? Morally panic-stricken lurkers surreptitiously praying for the demise of sex work??

It wasn't me! I didn't even know there was a poll.

I love Moral Panics!!!!!!! My favorites are: violent video games teaches children to be mass shooters, that stranger you see at Walmart is a child sex trafficker who almost abducted your kid in broad daylight like ten minutes ago. My number one, all-time favorite: Dungeons and Dragons players are Satanists! Full disclosure: I spent a lot of time rolling dice, drawing dungeons on paper and casting spells to banish the fictional demonic horde to the netherverse.

Ah, yes, D&D...remember some moral panic about that.

At the end of the day I wish some morally panicked folks could be at peace with the others in the world who are gonna do their own sexual thing. By and large I enjoy the company of my sexually conservative friends. It would be nice to be able to share my complete self with them - who I am, what I do, and what I love (ranch life). Until then...Opus.

I don't know if any of you know about "True Love Waits" and "Purity rings," but it's an effort by conservative churches to encourage youth to pledge to abstain from sex until marriage. Did it work? Well.. "a 2003 study showing that 6 out of 10 college students who had taken the pledge had broken it, and of the 40% who identified themselves as abstaining from intercourse, 55% acknowledged having participated in oral sex." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_Love_Waits). One megachurch pastor, Andy Savage, committed sexual assault on a minor in 1998 just days before he conducted one such "True Love Waits" workshop.

Why am I bringing this up? 1) this is a thread especially for those who come to the brothels longing for intimacy but bearing the weight of religiously inflicted shame; 2) for all its good intentions, abstinence sex pledges don't work.

So I laughed out loud in glad relief when I found Pastor (yes, "Pastor") Nadia Bolz-Weber's tweet a few months ago:

Folks have their preconceived notions of sex workers shattered at the legal NV brothels. Here's an example of a member of the clergy that should make us question what we think we know about 'em - bless, you Pastor. ;)

No it is not a sin, it is a place where you can come and explore your sexuality. It is better than be frustrated and maybe doing something that you shouldn't do! No sin here

  13. Unfortunately, this type of thinking leads to not talking about or preparing young people for sex, ignorance of birth control and preventing STDs, and very strange, unhealthy attitudes about sex.

  14. My mother was very repressed about sex, but thank God my father was much more realistic. When we had "The Talk" he explained things clearly an answered all the questions I had. He also said "Look if you're going to have sex, I don't want you getting some girl pregnant, and I don't want you getting disease. There are condoms in my sock drawer if you need them, but that doesn't mean I want you jumping on just any girl thst drops her drawers - use your big head and some discretion. And don't tell your mother about this talk - this is between us as men,"

  18. Sex is a primal need and not just for procreation. We are spirit beings that exist within carnal bodies... for a reason. It would be a sin not to spend this walk discovering what that means & why it's so important.

Sex is listed among the most basic human physiologic needs (food, water) by psychologist Abraham Maslow in a 1943 paper "A Theory of Human Motivation." It's no wonder, then, that sex is sought despite many religion-based prohibitions.

I just began reading a small Kindle book called "The Single Guy's Playground." What caught my eye was that it was written by a once-devout Mormon who eventually embraced the sexual side of himself.

This is what he wrote about his time as a Mormon missionary (when the two young men in white shirts and ties knock on your door to talk about the Book of Mormon with you):

I would wake up very early every morning, eat, spend an hour alone studying the bible, then an hour studying with my companion. Then, we would spend the entire day out knocking on doors and teaching people about the church. It’s no wonder Mormons have such a strong work ethic. On my mission, I spent 90% of my waking hours “doing the Lord’s work.”

There is, however, one part of being a missionary that you don’t hear about back home. This part has such a gigantic impact on missionaries that it causes the most common sin that missionaries commit, the law of chastity or… being sexually clean. While on your mission, you are not allowed to date, to kiss or even to hug women. You are not supposed to masturbate and it is nearly impossible to obtain access to any pornography.

You are almost never alone. Your same gender companion is always close by. As time passes, your companion can feel more and more like a jailer

with whom you are engaged in a pact of mutual destruction against the very notion of fun. When you do get a glimpse of an attractive girl in sexy clothing, your brain becomes clouded, and all you feel is desire. You try to push away the thoughts, but it is a constant battle.

I would love to see one or more of the ladies reach out to young men like this as kind of an "apostle to the converted." ;):)

On the way to work early this morning, thinking of John Mellencamp's song "John the Revelator." There's a verse in it that talks about the story of Adam and Eve, and of the first emotion they felt after they had eaten the forbidden fruit and "realized they were naked": shame.

God walked down in the cool of the day

    Called Adam by his name

    He refused to answer

'Cos he was naked and ashamed, yeah

    Naked, and ashamed.

Good News, pilgrim. No need to feel shame any more. Reality is not what the finger-shakers have long claimed it to be.

    Reverse the curse.

    Enjoy sex.

Notice how the serpent in this Eden depiction is suggestively female - with a breast, even. Also note how Eve wears her fig leaf almost like a tattoo over one butt cheek. Looks like they have lots of forbidden fruit for enjoyment later in the day in their basket. ;-)

"For repressive medieval Christians, the world came into being antiseptically, as an act of will. For taboo-breaking Hindus, it exists only as vibrations emanating from the copulating bodies of a god and goddess. Some authoritarian powers manage to catch their followers in an ascetic circular argument: they condemn acts such as homosexuality or bestiality because they are unnatural, while nevertheless claiming that to be natural is to be ungodly, and therefore damned anyway."

"...those popes who advocated celibacy were usually revealed as hypocrites. The 4th-century pope, Damasus, who wrote that "intercourse is a defilement," was accused by a Jewish convert of adultery and forced to stand trial before a synod of 44 bishops. He was only saved from execution by the intervention of the emperor, Gratian (359-383).

"Other popes were more resourceful in their own defense. Accused of seducing a nun in 440, Sixtus told the biblical story of the woman taken in adultery, and dared his judges to cast the first stone. Symmachus, charged in 501 with adultery, was the first--but by no means the last--pope to claim that, as pontiff, no human court could judge him. Even the pope could not escape natural justice, however, and several--including both John XII and his successor, Benedict V--are said to have died at the hands of jealous husbands."

@randyryder , my good friend, I think you've figured it out. I don't think it's a sin at all, as long as no one is harmed physically or emotionally.

To me, the act is not sinful. If it is used to hurt someone, that is sinful. Kindness and love are what count in this world. If we treat each other in a kind and loving (not to mention erotic) way, what can be sinful?

    Ugh...invisible sky fairies.
