Martin Van Buren The 8th President of the United States of America, former Vice President to President Andrew Jackson, and the FIRST president to be born after we declared independence. He was a founder of the Democratic party. Was was born to Dutch American Patriot parents who had been fighters in our war for independence, and is the only president to have spoken English as a second Language. Pretty cool huh? But, he denied Texas when they applied to join the Union, continued the policy of Indian removal, maintained peaceful relations with Britain, and created the independent treasury system which moved federal funds out of the standard banking system. Eventually he started having political problems with his own party for changing his previously accepting position on slavery and for refusing to allow Texas to join, so he quit the democratic party which was very strong in the South at the time, and formed a third party which it is argued threw the balance of power and potentially changed the outcome of the following presidential elections. Funny, considering he was initially a vocal advocate of having only a two party system divided along purely ideological lines. And in spite of all of this, and his obviously important place in history and as a leader of the USA, he is probably someone most people have never heard of.
