Nevada's political caucus on Saturday is attracting more attention than just the conventional news media.
"The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" will have a feature Thursday on the Silver State's first meaningful caucus. The show, which features Stewart telling jokes, interviewing people and commenting on the day's news, sent correspondent Rob Riggle to Nevada last weekend.
The show interviewed University of Nevada, Reno political science professor Eric Herzik and also appears to have gone to the BunnyRanch brothel run by Dennis Hof in Lyon County just east of Carson City.
"Clearly they talked to Dennis Hof, so there were some sexually oriented questions about prostitution," Herzik said. "So my job was to not laugh and to give straight answers."
Herzik has been interviewed before by the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and national news magazines. Does his two-hour interview with Daily Show staff on Sunday mean he's finally arrived?
Herzik bellowed with laughter and recounts what he told the Daily Show staff.
"I said 'Guys, this could end my career,' " Herzik said. "They said, 'No you've made it. We've had all the major pundits on.' "
Comedy Central spokesman Steve Albani confirmed the Nevada segment is scheduled for Thursday's show, but declined to divulge too much about the contents.
"We prefer people to tune in and check them out," Albani said. "Jokes are always better when you broadcast them than when you read them in print."
The theme of the "Daily Show" interview was similar to other interviews he's given, Herzik said. People want to know that Nevada isn't just about gambling, drinking and divorce.
Being a comedy show, though, other topics came up.
"They asked some really off-the-wall questions," Herzik said. "I don't know if you can print it."
Another theme is Riggle mispronouncing the state's name and Herzik correcting him.

| Just another Sam Dehne Wannabee... who'll be reading corny Q-cards that try to say clever stuff about all those other Sam Dehne Wannabees who are in town to hoodwink the apathetic citizens into thinking they can trust Nevada's video game voting "system". The media's fear and jealousy of Reno Gvmt Rock Star Watchdog Sam Dehne is only surpassed by that of the local potentates and grand poobahs. Reno Media? (BURP!) Daily? Talking with another bureaucratic "usual suspect" like Herzik proves they follow their own noses around just like all the other antediluvian schmoes. (BURP!) Sam | |
