Depends on your definition. I've known people that despite all odds have remained closely connected for their entire lives...some romantically, but most platonically. Are they soul mates? Best friends? Whatever they are, it's a pretty remarkable thing.

I've known those your describing too. The dynamics vary as well. "Remarkable" indeed! I want one... I think. Gulp. Someone to grow old with. N be a healthy influence for each other. I'm a true believer that we get what we are looking for in this life (good and bad), so keep yourself open to the idea of a soul mate and you may very well find opportunities presenting themselves to you! Good luck, lovely lady! ![Heart fill with love [smilie=heart fill with love.gif]](./chat_old/images/smilies/Heart fill with love.gif)

Soul mates exist, I knew it the first night and continue to think so 22 years later.

Can a soul mate necessarily have to be someone you date or marry?? I have friend who I went out with a few times and we didn't hit it off in a romantic way, but we totally click in just about every other way. Is that really a soul mate?? Especially kinda weird being we married different people. We are still GREAT friends and she probably knows more about me than anyone else in the world! (Including my ex-wife!)

YES!!! I do believe in soul mates and believe that we are connected to several souls in our existence... they can be friends, family, or lovers! That deeper connection that goes beyond what is commonly shared with others in our lives! Al

Maybe not actual soul mates, but I do believe in people connecting so strongly that they become kindred spirits. There are people I've connected with in such a way that the connection seems to be unaffected by time and space.

Yes, I believe in soul mates. I am a romantic at heart. I like to believe that we all have souls and our souls all originate from the same place. That soul mate would be the soul right next to you at creation. If souls are three dimensional, like we are right now, then you had multiple sides at creation, and there is a possibility that you could have more than one soul mate.
But I think souls are multi dimensional like strings in String Theory..... And then that leads to what is God, the pool of souls.... But I digress.
I have had a friendship where I could just look at them and know how they felt and what they meant. I like to think that deep level of understanding and communication is what it is like to be rejoined with our soul mate.

I am really not sure what I believe anymore Olivia. I would like to believe there is that one perfect person out there for me who fits me just like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and completes the missing pieces in my life. Well, maybe not really completes me, because you really have to be complete solo before you are ready for a true love. Just the pieces that fit to make your life that more enriched I should phrase. I have a handful of true friends. My best friend Daniel and I have known each other since boyscouts and when our schools merged we hung out even more. He is one of the few friends I can actually call a brother. There isn't many friends you find in the world who you make part of your family, and vice versa.
As far as romantic soulmate, I think maybe there is just people you fit with more than others. No relationship is ever going to be peaches and cream and champagne 100% of the time. If you say it is, I am gonna call you a liar. You work every day at relationships when you are in them. I like the notion of meeting someone and when eyes connect it is instant and love the rest of our lives and have children and the log cabin home by a lake, the dogs and all that jazz, but I just don't see that in my future.

I used to believe in soul mates-however the more I have experienced and lived in the last few years, I think it is a nice idea, but not a realisitc one. There are so many people in the world that there seems to be too much temptation for a man, women relationship or other kind of relationship. The new theory I have is that people are like the ebb and flow of the ocean. They come into our lives for a short or long time for a reason and leave or stay in some way or the other. They are supposed to pass through our lives for some reason and for some time period being a long time or short time. I think again people are like the ebb and flow of the ocean and are meant to serve a purpose in our life for a reason just as we are to serve a purpose in their life for a reason for a certain amount of time....

I think it's possible to have a remarkable relationship, and be incredibly close with someone, but I'm not so certain about being destined to be with someone. I think that if we're lucky we get a few great loves in our life, and what we call those loves isn't as important as appreciating when you have them.

I think that you connect more with certain people and you have amazing relationships, but I don't think that there is only "one" person meant for you in life. I think we go through life in stages and different people fit into those stages at those times. I think we have many soulmates, and that's not just limited to the opposite sex, either. Friends can definitely be soulmates (reminds me of a Sex and the City episode haha).

I really like this topic.
I don’t believe in soul mates in a metaphysical sense, but I think it is a nice term to use to describe anyone with whom we share a great deal in common--a kindred spirit sort of person in our lives. I definitely agree that friends can be soul mates, and I also think that the ideal marriage (for those interested in it) would be between two people who already have that deeper connection of shared values and understandings.
In my experience, having a soul mate is an extremely rare thing. (I’m totally envious of you, Olivia, for finding so many!) But I think a prerequisite for finding a true soul mate is having a good sense of who you are, so that you and that other soul can connect in the right ways when you do happen to cross paths.

yes I belive in them. I see soulmates as more the romeo/juliet way ( where you meet eyes of somebody and just everything falls in place) vs somebody who you grow to be connected to. (thats more falling in love and building a soulmate like realtionship.) nothing wrong with either. you are happy in either no sense asking how it was made.
another thing is some soulmates are able to span lifetimes and find each other time and time again.
the argument if they are real or not is more that people are trained and taught that if you can't touch, see, disect, test, analyze soemthing it isnt real so people lose hope/faith in the idea.
as far as having only 1 soul mate........... I would say no. just on the grounds of no person should be given that much power over you. where they are your entire life. you should have at least 2. the second should not be a romantic soulmate but somebody who goes beyond the best friend label.
just my techno colored take of the topic

I don't believe in "soulmates" or that you're "destined" to be with someone (whether one or several). I do believe that two people can love each other so much that they have no interest in ever being with someone else, what I guess would be called "true love". I've seen this, with my aunt and uncle. They've been married for almost 45 years, and still are, very obviously, at least as much in love now as they were when they first met. They spend nearly all their time together now, partly to make up for the times they couldn't be together as much as they wanted (my uncle, a "Damn Yankee" from Boston, was in the Air Force). Watching them interact is sometimes like watching a couple of teenagers Most people this doesn't happen for, but I also believe that two people can grow to love each other over time. Most people these days don't have the ability or desire to make a real commitment to a relationship with another person (not saying it has to be a monogamous relationship, different things work for different people). Both sets of my grandparents did do this, my dad's parents were married nearly 60 years before they died, and my mom's parents were married almost 66 years before my granddad died. They made a commitment to each other, and kept that commitment for decades, through bad times and good times, whatever came. Personally, I would love to have a relationship like my grandparents had, a real commitment to each other, but not necessarily "soulmates" or "true love". Unfortunately, I've spent the last couple of decades learning that no one is interested in even dating me, much less spending the rest of my life with me . So I've more or less just given up on the idea altogether.

Well, having gotten to know you fairly well as of late, in some ways I feel I "get you" without a whole lot of explanation and I feel you understand me just as well.
Soul mates ?...I'm scared to use that term because it might confuse the nature of the relationship.
Good friends ? ABSOLUTELY !!!

Yes, I had one about 15 years ago. The first time I saw her, I said, "that is my kind of girl". When we started dating, I learned she came out of a terrible marriage, and she told me she would never love again. We would get very close, and then she would push me away...and then we would get even closer. We only dated like 6 weeks, but every minute with her was a mountain top experience. She had an outdoor party, and everybody went inside when it started pouring rain. We stood outside kissing, oblivious to the rain. Later, when everybody left, we held other for an hour, and she was shaking. We gave each other reasons we were not good for each other (mine took about 20 minutes to get through). She was the first girl I said "I love you" to. She all but told me, she loved me too. In the end, she pushed me away for good. Ironically, I don't think I canfall in love again. Sorry, but this was cathartic for me.

Yes, but they are few and far between. The term is over and mis-used, especially in personal ads.

I think it can be kind of dangerous when people set out to "find" a soul mate because they think they have to. Always having that in the back of someone's mind could easily lead them to miss out on some truly magical experiences.

I sure do, It doesnt have to be your life partner or any thing, just some one who you connect with on that level.
