Do you think that maybe your biggest positive change is still to come?

How old were you when you made it?

I want to hear about changes that were difficult, but you did them anyways and are a better person now. Or if you didn't yet let us know if it will happen. [smilie=heart fill with love.gif] [smilie=heart fill with love.gif]

I changed my underwear. I think that's a positive change.

I think the positive change I made was taking care of my mom and sending my sister to cooking school.

When I took on the responsibility of becoming the main care-giver for my elderly Parents. My Father came to me and asked if I would be willing to help him and my Mother.I would be caring for them and their home,my childhood home, because it had become too much of a burden for them.My Father told me he knew that I would be giving up a lot of personal freedom, but that they needed my help.

I knew I would be taking on a big responsibility, but ,considering all the sacrifices they made for me growing up,there was no way I could say no to them. It's hard working full-time and caring for my Parents, but the rewards of knowing they are taken care of couldn't make me happier.I wouldn't trade that for anything in the world! :D

I guess most of the women here play a row supporting our families. Casanova is right. You are a wonderful woman.

Second is after a tragedy happened to me I went into a deep depression and hit rock bottom trying to feel better ( well not feel better but I was dead inside and wanted to feel something) But have gotten off of everything I used to do Drinking, Drugs, etc and Have been Clean and Sober for over 6 years now

I haven't shared these things with many people but the Boards and Ranches are my great friends and family thanks for listening ;)

Helping my mom out back in Michigan. I send her some $$$ each month to help her with medical bills and groceries. I'd move back there, but the job market is zilch, and I'm looking to retire here in Minnesota in two years. I'm lucky I'm working and I love where I work. My mom quit her job to become a housewife years ago when I was a kid, and now it's my turn to help out.

I do think that if I quit being a Lions fan, that might be a positive change, but I've got too much time and emotion invested to quit now! [smilie=happy.gif]

Frankly, when I finally drew a line in the sand this summer and told my parents under no uncertain terms.

"I am going to live my life the way I choose to live my life. You can either choose to be accepting of it or you can choose to not be a part of it. Either way, I am at a point where I don't care anymore. But if you choose to stay in my life." Things have been better between us ever since.

It's so refreshing to listen about people life change that work on their favor.

Sometimes we make some choices/changes that don't go as expected but remember that was just a step towards something that could be very promising.

I'm working on changing careers and moving west. All I want to do it work outside with my hands. I anticipate this is going to take a while but I believe the change with be worth it and I will end-up a happier person in the end.

Get somewhere within one day's drive of my family but also within reasonable traveling distance to explore the Rockies, Pacific northwest, Great Plains, and Mohave Desert.

I sure hope I can get this accomplished within the next six months because if I can, it should be fun.

My most positive change came when I turned 21. I dont know how or why it happened but I stopped caring about what people thought of me and how they viewed me.

I have learned to make the best of bad situations and keep my sense of humor in face of physical problems!
Had a neck surgery 5 years ago and spinal surgery last year which had me in a nursing home for therapy over a year! Just got home in July from being away 13 months! Despite needing a walker for short at home walk and wheelchair for anything over 100 feet, I have tried to keep a smile on my face and a laugh in my heart! I feel I am a stronger person where it counts!!!!

Wow Kevin, you took two big steps in life!!! Life style changing so you can keep healthy wait is hard to do and you over come that. The second one, also hard to achieve. Although I have never had any experience with it addiction I had in my family and that didn't end up good. I actually lost a brother. I always liked you but I even more respect for you [smilie=heart fill with love.gif] . You go Kevin!

My most positive change came for me last year when I realized I had a drinking problem. Since then I've cut back in a major way and now have more time to be the kind of friend and family member I can be proud of :) I also consider coming to LR very positive for me, and I hope that I can give my mom the kind of life she gave me growing up. *Positive thoughts* [smilie=happy.gif]

Hmmmm....I'm not going to go TOO much into depth, because this is a public website :) but....

1. Took care of my mom and stuck with her during her alcohol days. Not so much positive for me, but positive for her.
2. Left an emotionally draining and dead end relationship with my first love.
3. Started college; dual majoring, and then going on to get my Masters.
4. and of course, found a second home at the Love Ranch :) Being at the ranch is helping me pursue and conquer so many of my goals, especially education and traveling and saving up for the future. It was a great and positive decision/change for me. I love it!

I love this thread, Jade!

This is a good one. It took me awhile to learn to be careful with who I become friends with.. it's said that we always pick up the bad habits of the people we hang out with, not the good habits.

Excellent thread Jade!! Probably the first big change in my life was as a teenager and listening to my dad when it wasn't popular to do so..then doing exactly what he suggested. Your parents will never steer you wrong. At least mine never have.

The biggest personal change for me is quitting drinking in 1983 at 28 years old. The next year I quit smoking. There is no doubt that I would be dead (or close to it) had I not stopped those two things. I certainly wouldn't be doing what I do for a living now.

I know I disabled a time bomb when I did that.

The most positive thing I have ever done is to consciously stay positive and learn the art of meditation.... What's better to come is finding my infinite self and separating the ego from the spiritual self. I highly recommend my favorite book in the WORLD!

The Title: Infinite Self, 33 steps to reclaiming your inner power. Written by the great Stuart Wilde.

Well I'm rolling the dice and moving to Denver Colorado in a week, to take a job where I stand to earn more than double what I've made in the past. That would be what I consider life changing money.

We'll see how positive of a change it was here before long I guess. Stay tuned.

I quit smoking 11 years ago and have slowly been getting on the road to better health. Have been running half marathons, doing long distance bicycling and backpacking, hoping for my first full marathon run this summer

One of the most recent change I am trying to make is to get my nutrition back in order. There is a big change in how your diet affects yours quality of life.

learn that one action is consequence of the other. Eventually things fall into place. But you do have to work hard for that. Nothing comes easy and this is good. We are humans and things that are just handled to us tend to go easy. [smilie=heart fill with love.gif]

In late July, I made the decision to lose weight. Since that day, I've lost close to 40 lbs. The best part about it is, people that know me and see me often, are taking notice and a happy for me. They are asking me how I'm doing.

most definitely. I had chocolate last night (peanut butter cups) but I only had 2 because I felt so guilty eating them. Many people that know me are asking me how I'm losing the weight. I just don't eat as much.

I also ate at Buffalo Wild Wings yesterday with friends so I'm sure that did not help! haha

Imagine how much more weight I'd lose if I had more sex in my life! haha

Quitting smoking 15 years ago, right before I turned 40. Definitley noticed a difference when I shoulder a backpack and head out into the hills and the quality of everyday living.

Good for you JHF! I have never smoked but have seen its effects on friends of mine. " Quality of Life " is huge to those of us who love the outdoors.

Thanks Slednx, that was one of the best decisions that I have ever made, started at too young an age and at least I had a great GP Doctor that kept after me to stop, one of the toughest things I've ever had to do but it was worth it.

Your pretty brave not a lot of people could do that.... :)

Thanks Jade I appreciate that, giving up smoking was a tough thing to do but it was well worth it

Trying to lighten up! I lost my dad at 12 and was left with a mom who was a mess for a long time. I ended up growing up really quickly as a result. I took care of my mom until she passed away last November. Maybe it was their deaths or maybe it was just finally getting some distance, but I decided to work on embracing my inner goof and try new things. Guess that's whay I'm here!

That is a hard one, Jax. Not something where you can just say "eh, I'm gonna move forward now." Taking on raising a parent while simultaneously losing the other is not something any 12 yr old kid is equipped to do, so I commend you for turning out seemingly normal.

I decided to quit being my own worst critic, and to tell myself and truly believe that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. Having a positive attitude really does change your life.

1. I think is very noble of you Ruby. I would have done the same.
2. That was a good decision.
3. You are doing the right thing. I started late college.
4. I congratulate you for you success Ruby. You are goal oriented and I admire this on you.

And I love you [smilie=heart fill with love.gif]

Excellent thread Jade!! Probably the first big change in my life was as a teenager and listening to my dad when it wasn't popular to do so..then doing exactly what he suggested. Your parents will never steer you wrong. At least mine never have.

The biggest personal change for me is quitting drinking in 1983 at 28 years old. The next year I quit smoking. There is no doubt that I would be dead (or close to it) had I not stopped those two things. I certainly wouldn't be doing what I do for a living now.

I know I disabled a time bomb when I did that.
DD

Thank you DD. IT's hard for us as teenagers to listen to our parents. And I find very noble that you did and told us here.
You did pretty early what is good. I had drinking problems in my family and I know how it is. I didn't really understood until my own brother passed away. It's devastating that he realized he had a problem and that it was too late for him at that point.

Ending relationships, at first my last one took a huge toll on me, but my positively it is exactly what it needed and was a very positive change in my life. And we are better off that way, and still the best of friends. I couldn't be any happier how things are now!

About 30 years ago, my nickname that I gave myself was "the loser". There was a cartoon with the same name, so I cut it out and carried it in my wallet. I have since found out I am very, very ADD, and that type of thinking is common. Reading Learned Optimism by Martin Seligman helped a lot. I recently found out about a support group for ADD, and I am very encouraged. I am coming to the ranches next week, but my desk is crazy bad, so please send good thoughts.
Jade - thank you for this thread
Mixie - you always inspire me with your positive thoughts
Barbie - good for you
Ruby - thanks for all of your help. [smilie=happy.gif]

I have never smoked, but my sister does and I see on her how difficult it is to stop it. Very proud of you.
I saw you here before and let me tell you something....life is being good to your looks. [smilie=heart fill with love.gif]
Thanks Jade I appreciate that, giving up smoking was a tough thing to do but it was well worth it

My pleasure JLH [smilie=heart fill with love.gif]
You will have to tell me how you did it. I am trying to get my sister to stop for a while now.

You are very strong considering you are in a smokers environment.

Hmmmm......the road not taken. The story of my life for the most part. However the risks, the results have proven to be nothing less than Godsend.

Of course I can be more specific than that, but there you have it Jade, in a nutshell. :D :D

you will have to tell me more about it next time you are here [smilie=heart fill with love.gif]

OK - very briefly, I decided on dropping out of two Universities; USC and UCLA to pursue other career opportunities. That decision has served me quite well with NO regrets. :D

For me, studying psychology brought about a number of positive changes.

For example, years ago I used to think that whenever I was in a negative mood, that I should focus on my negative feelings as well as their causes and consequences. What I didn't realize is that brooding or ruminating about your problems trains your mind to attend to the darker side of life. This mental bias toward negativity is one of the things that can make a person depressed. So now when I have a set back, I acknowledge it just long enough to learn from the experience and then I turn my attention to positive things. Having made this change, I am tremendously happier!
