Wow, that is strange. They sound like characters from a John Irving novel, or something similar. I love weird news stories though, so cool post, Jill!

Could the moon have played a role in Titanic's sinking? (coming up on 100th Anniversary)
Al That would make sense since Edward Smith was such an esteemed captain. Almost makes one feel a bit better about the tragedy.

In fairness though the Titanic wasn't Smith's first major incident. A ship under his command had previously collided with a Royal Navy warship. As with most of these incidents though it was a combination of factors that led to the demise of the Titanic and those onboard. There was a belief, stated by Smith himself but also held by others, that modern ships were nigh-on indestructible except when subjected to military ordinance. There were also messages about the ice that were not passed on to the crew including the final message from the SS California which was responded to with a message telling them to shut up by the radio controller. And there was inadequate lighting and field of vision for the lookouts. It was wholly avoidable though had the first few warning messages been heeded and had Smith not believed the Titanic unsinkable; but then it was advertised as being unsinkable. Anyhoo... here's a strange one... It seems the British Government were looking to save themselves £159m. All well and good, only it appears to have cost them £1.4bn to make those savings... Now I'm no great economist but something may well have gone amiss here... http://news.sky.com/home/politics/article/16183887And a man was "mugged" by a fox... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/9130473/15st-man-mugged-by-fox.html

THIS seal had a VERY lucky escape when it ended up perched on shark's nose — just inches from the beast's open jaws. The Great White burst out of the sea beneath the seal, hoping to snap it up for lunch. But it misjudged the attack and the fortunate little mammal teetered perilously for a while before falling back into the water and escaping. The picture was taken by South African wildlife photographer Chris Fallows near Seal Island, which is home to an estimated 64,000 seals and a group of sharks who hunt them.

Syrian TV's state-approved channel have run a story suggesting that Spanish soccer club and current European and World Champions, FC Barcelona, is assisting rebel fighters by providing coded messages in the way that they play football.
They claim that the formation and tactics of the Barcelona team are a coded map of routes used to smuggle weapons to rebel fighters, with Andres Iniesta's run through the pitch the first part of the route and Lionel Messi's pass an indication of a handover of a shipment. They also went on to name several other Barcelona players involved in this conspiracy and claimed that Barcelona manager, Josep Guardiola, is a key figure, possibly even the mastermind behind the plot!
Taking into account the levels of paranoia in totalitarian states, this is pretty far out there!
Of course, this may be some sort of joke to distract the Syrian population from the fact they have ongoing strife in the country but even so, it's bloody barmy!

Soooo, some bloke, who says he is "not sick" has admitted to having sex with 1,000 cars! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/2000899/Man-admits-having-sex-with-1000-cars.htmlFirst, some psychologists may disagree with his claims about not having anything wrong with him. Second, how do you have sex with a car? Put your winky in the exhaust? What if it is rusty? You must have to use those reinforced condoms they have for rough anal sex, right? I mean, really? What if someone turns the car on? You could have your knob blown off! I mean, honestly? And wouldn't your knees get sore from bending down to put it in the tailpipe? It can be uncomfortable on a bed after a while, never mind a road! Thirdly, if I woke up one morning, made myself a coffee, checked the news, showered, got dressed and left the house to find someone having sex with my car, I would be very unhappy. I think cars should be protected against unwanted sexual advances! This man says that sometimes he just sees a car looking lonely and has to have sex with it! I mean, come on? That's not on. He also claims to have had sex with the helicopter from Airwolf. How awkward would that be? Sitting in a pub with a few guys and perhaps Airwolf comes on the TV when one of the guys nudges you with his elbow, leans over and says 'See that? I've had her!".

Manchester City FC, hotly tipped to win the English Premier League not so long ago, have suffered a series of poor results as of late which has made their manager, Roberto Mancini, very unhappy as it threatens to put a dent in the title ambitions. Having noticed Mancini munching on some Fruit Pastilles during a game, an eight year old female fan sent him some to cheer him up! He replied with a note thanking her! Perhaps it worked? Manchester City won 4-0 tonight while title rivals Manchester United lost, keeping Manchester City in the title race! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/9197599/Sweet-present-delights-under-pressure-Roberto-Mancini.html

There was an episode of My Strange Addiction a couple of weeks ago about a guy who was in love with his car. I guess there will never be any drama since the car can't talk back.

Google images offered up this... http://ngiley.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/sex-with-car.jpgSuffice to say that link is not safe for work, your mother, your family, any mental health professionals you may be in contact with or the King of Belgium. Austria and Slovenia have decided to have an international spat about the rights to name a sausage and have appealed to the European Union to make an official ruling over who the sausage belongs to. Yes, that's right, an organisation which costs its member states tens of billions a year each, now has to decide whether Austria or Slovenia created this sausage. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/foodanddrinknews/9204316/Austria-and-Slovenia-row-over-sausages.htmlThe fact that technically speaking Austria has a different version of the sausage that the Slovenians claim as their own appears to have gone over the head of all involved. Also new research (read: pissing away public funds for a laugh) has said discovered that a significant number of women are unable to properly understand compliments, instead viewing them as offensive. Apparently, telling a woman "You look well" is a sure fire way to receiving a swift kick to the gonads, while calling them curvy could well result in you failing to return from a long trip in the countryside... okay, I made up the repercussions but even so... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/9203674/A-mans-guide-to-delivering-a-compliment.htmlI wonder how Doctor Zoidberg's classic "You look malnourished. Are you suffering from internal parasites?" line would go down...

14 years before the sinking of the Titanic, Morgan Robertson wrote a novell named Futilty. It was about a huge ocean liner that was insinkable. The ship, which did not have enough safetu boats, hit an iceberg, and sank. The ship's name was....the Titan. He later wrote (1914??) A story where Japan does not declare war, but executes a surprise plane attack on American ships. The story also talks about an ultraviolet light that causes blindess and burns, which some say foreshadowed the atomic bomb.

No, I did not read either book Ms. Jill. I just did some info gathering, because what he wrote was so freaky. I believe the American ships that were attacked were commercial, but still. I can't believe his ship was named the Titan. I guess he did claim to have some special mental powers.

Hundreds of dogs that would go into the pot are released in China
No less than 505 dogs were released from 156 small cages just before being sent to restaurants, where they would be appreciated as a delicacy served in the province of Yunnan (China). The complaint was made at Weibo, Twitter Chinese, which led the police local dog intercept the charge, told the "Daily Mail". But transportation was nice and the staff could do nothing. When it appeared that the dogs would go to pot, a private institution stepped in and bought all the animals - the equivalent of 18,000 reais . Twelve countries still have dog in their diet: China, Indonesia, South Korea, Mexico, Philippines, Polynesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Russia (Siberia), Canada (North) USA (Alaska) and two cantons of Switzerland .

And here's a news story for you, after that rather pointless anecdote. A hotel in the New Forest National Park in Southern England has installed bicycle-powered televisions into their rooms! The hotel prides itself on being as eco-friendly as possible and this is one of its latest endeavours. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/9252360/Hotel-installs-bicycle-powered-television.htmlI'll be honest, I think this idea is so fantastic I might actually go and stay there for a week! Not just because of the eco-friendly aspect but given I need to lose some weight, if the only way I could watch my sports and Game of Thrones and whatever else I watch was to use the cycle I'm sure the pounds would start coming off!

Beans, that is an appropos anecdote! I am a fan of another anecdote--people kill people. We like to blame firearms, crossbows, drugs etc. for our bad behavior rather than taking personal responsibility.
And about the bicycle powered TV--I rarely watch TV in hotel rooms. Now it'd be another story if I had to bicycle for my internet service.

Jill, I'm not sure if this falls under weird, but it will surely raise some eyebrows in the most conservative areas of the USA. Click to get to the story.

KerrAvon2109 wrote: Be careful about the favor you do for a friend. http://now.msn.com/now/0511-accidental-mayor.aspx The above link is to a news story on MSN Now about a man, Fabio Borsatti, who (as a last minute favor for the incumbent mayor) ran against him in an election in Cimolais, Italy. He did it because he feared voters would shun the polls if the mayor ran unopposed. The twist is that, during the election, Fabio got 58% of the vote and was elected mayor. I hate to quote Latin, Jill, but I think this quote is appropriate. Vox populi, vox Dei. -- The voice of the people is the voice of God. Good luck, Fabio. You're definitely going to need it. I love examples of irony!

ENCOUNTERS PORTFOLIO: Winner James Morgan, UK. Boy playing with pet shark, Sulawesi, Indonesia. James Morgan, UK. Whilst few young children are now born on boats, the ocean is still very much their playground and whilst they are getting conflicted messages from their communities, who simultaneously refrain from spitting in the ocean whilst continuing to dynamite its reefs, I still believe they could play a crucial role in the development of western marine conservation practices.
