Everyone loves music, whether it be because of the melodies, lyrics, beats, or all of it. I love being turned on to something new in the music department. I'm very open, and I love it when a person and myself can bond over music. It can be such a deep connection. I love it!

I thought this could be a thread where we could all turn each other on.....to new music :) If you found out about a new artist/band, a new release from an already established artist/band, a remix, etc., let us know! I want to hear about it!

I'll start. I love John Prine. There is a tribute CD featuring some of my favorite artists and bands remaking his songs. It's AMAZING. I can't stop listening to it.

Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine --

Track listing:

1) Justin Vernon of Bon Iver – “Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow)"
2) Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band – “Wedding Day In Funeralville"
3) My Morning Jacket – “All The Best"
4) Josh Ritter – “Mexican Home"
5) Lambchop – “Six O'Clock News"
6) Justin Townes Earle – “Far From Me"
7) The Avett Brothers – “Spanish Pipedream"
8 ) Old Crow Medicine Show – “Angel From Montgomery"
9) Sara Watkins – “The Late John Garfield Blues"
10) Drive-By Truckers – “Daddy's Little Pumpkin"
11) Deer Tick featuring Liz Isenberg – “Unwed Fathers"
12) Those Darlins – “Let's Talk Dirty In Hawaiian"

What have you been turned on to recently? What recent finds and discoveries in music would you like us to know about? Post lyrics, videos, information, etc!

While I'm not big into the hip hop / rap scene (my musical roots run into the heavy metal scene and diverge from there) but I do think some of the hip hop artists coming out of Canada are outstanding and definitely worth a listen.

what I recommend to you is Buck 65 http://buck65.com/.
stage name for a Nova Scotian MC, artist, and turntablist and radio host.
his latest release is 20 Odd Years imo, his best album... a lot of collaborations with other Canadian indie musicians

have a listen here

Any Ben Folds fans out there? or....Ke$ha? ;)

Here is a remake Ben Folds did for Ke$ha's song "Sleazy"

Take a listen. It's pretty amazing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN1nD_mftaI

Also, Ben Folds covered Bitches Ain't poopoo by Dr. Dre

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjFRy8jQ ... re=related

Both are so good!!!! I would marry Ben Folds in a quick minute. His piano skills are out of this world.

The thing I'll always remember about Ben Folds is that he came out with that song "Brick" when I was married. I heard him talk about what it was about, and I felt like it totally described the way I was feeling.

Sorry, didn't mean to bring everybody down, ha ha :D

I can see how that song can have multiple meanings, obviously depending on the person who's listening, but I'm pretty sure it's about abortion, right? If that's what was going on, I'm so sorry :(

Give us something new, snicks! Introduce us to something :)

I am MusicMan, therefor, I must respond to a music thread!!!

As for newer music, I try to keep up with all the releases on Seattle's Sub Pop records, even though they have quite a few. One of the better releases recently is the band Dum Dum Girls. I really like one song in particular on their new album called "Bedroom Eyes". A very catchy tune! Not sure how to link that song, but there are snippets of it on Itunes. By the way, the name of their new album is "Only in Dreams". Some other tracks off that album are pretty good too!

As you know, I really like Camera Obscura, and in particular, their last three albums, in order: "Underachievers Please Try Harder", "Lets Get Out of This Country", and "My Maudlin Career". I honestly think that their album "Lets Get Out of This Country" is one of the better albums released in any genre, in the last 10 years. It's easily one of the most underrated albums of at least the last 10 years, it's that good! Very catchy stuff that gets the emotions soaring all over the place! "I like the free days with no expectations / I like it my way with no imitations..." Good stuff!

Also, if you haven't already, check out two "B-side" tunes of Camera Obscura (they are on Itunes), "Lemon Juice and Paper Cuts" and "I Can't Stay Mad at You". Both are good, but the latter being a really, really good tune...I can't believe it wasn't added to the "Lets Get Out..." album.

I honestly don't know who Ben Folds is! And I remember Bitches Ain't Poo (nice edit job there, LOL!) and Dr. Dre from my early high school days! There is a cover of that song?! As for rap, I like the old school stuff, so none of the new artists really appeal to me...but that's just me...

And this isn't really a new tune, but a tune you might like is called "Vapour Trail", by a group called Trespassers William. Her singing and harmonies are so magical and other worldly, it's a tune I ALWAYS listen to on my way to and from the ranches. Check it out!

I know you don't like the Pixies Ruby, but check out just two of their songs, one called "Havalina" and the other "Into the White". Kim Deal sings "Into the White", and that song is freaking awesome!!! I could listen to both of those Pixies songs I mentioned and never tire of them! If nothing else, I'm gonna bring those two tunes on my trip in two weeks and let you listen to them...you just have to trust me that they are great tunes!

I could go on for days talking music(!), but will add more later on...

And I will have to check some of the bands you mentioned as well, and let you know what I think...

I always liked William Shatner's ...yes, William Shatner's... cover of Pulp's "Common People", where he's backed up by Joe Jackson. It's really, really, surprisingly good:

The album itself, "Has Been", was a collaboration with Ben Folds, and he did "Thats Me Trying" with him:

(probably because I'm a huge Henry Rollins fan, but thats besides the point)

Please go to Youtube and try the following great guitar players (sorry no lyrics):
Jack Thammarat - Falling in Love Again
Gustavo Guerra - Canon Rock
Django Rhinehardt - Minor Swing

Sorry, no links because I am tech idiot. If you are interested, I can follow with some background.

Wow, every time I talk about that album, people laugh at me. I think "That's Me Trying" is such a heartbreaking song. And yes, "Common People" really is good.

ah yes... that is Jenn Grant... another one of our great indie singer songwriters :)

if Buck 65 didn't really tickle your fancy, might I suggest Hey Rosetta
Hey Rosetta! latest Seeds was shortlisted for Canada's polaris prize, an award that "celebrates and rewards creativity and diversity in Canadian recorded music. Polaris recognizes and markets albums of the highest artistic integrity, without regard to musical genre, professional affiliation, or sales history. it is adjudicated by selected music journalists, broadcasters and bloggers" (ganked from the Polaris website)

you wanted to be introduced to something new... hopefully I'm doing that by pimping out some of my favourite Canadian 'Indie' artists. I can only hope you dig em enough to give these guys (and more) a listen.

oooooor if you want something a little more feminine :P (since you enjoyed Jenn Grant) and is not Canadian... I can't help but recommend Australian Mama Kin
I seriously love this track

Hey snicks, my friend is a huge fan of Ride, and told me about the Trespassers William version (they are an indie rock group out of southern Cali). Ride's version is really good too, plus its the original, and I also like the T.W. version. The T.W. version just sounds AWESOME in the forested mountains I drive through on my way to and from the ranches. Either way, though, it's a really great tune, and thanks for linking the youtube video of it.

"you are a vapour trail / in a deep blue sky..." - good stuff!

Actually, I was in a little bit of a hurry when I wrote that post, and may not know exactly what Ruby thinks of the Pixies, she just said before that she listened to their most known song, "Where is my Mind", for about 30 seconds, and then stopped listening to it...or something to that effect. I may be drawing my own conclusions here, but from that, I just figured that Ruby must not like the Pixies very much! She will have to chime in at some point about what she thinks about them...

By the way, that song "Here Comes Your Man" is a really catchy tune...

And although the Pixies have some tunes that are sort of out there, and Frank Black does some yelling here and there on some of their tunes that can turn some people off to them, the two songs I mentioned to her, "Havalina" (love that song!) and "Into the White" are very good and easy on the ears...as is their songs like "Ana", "Gigantic", etc.

"where is my mind / where is my mind / way out on the water, see it swimming?"

Another band that I'm ashamed to admit that took me years to discover, is the Irish rock/punk band The Pogues. That band is WAY underrated, and was one of the best things to come out of the 80s.

The energy of that band, combined with some very good song writing by their crazy front man, Shane McGowan, makes them very unique and FUN to listen to! I would love to see anybody be able to resist dancing to some of their songs, like "Sally MacLennane" (my most listened to song on my IPOD), "If I Should Fall From Grace From God", "Rain Street, "Transmetropolitan", "Metropolis", "Sunnyside of the Street", and on and on. They do a really good job of covering Irish Folk classic/standards as well, such as "The Wild Rover" ("Ive been a wild rover for manys a year / and I've spent all me money on whisky and beer" - funny stuff!), "Muirshin Durkin", "Dingle Regatta", etc.

The backing band is so solid, talented, and top notch, I can't believe they are not more well known (or that it took me so long to discover them). Every time I listen to them, they put me in a good mood!

I'm curious Ruby, or anybody else for that matter, have you heard of The Pogues, or heard any of their songs? If so, curious to know what you all think of them.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but Ruby, didn't you say in a previous post that you have some Irish in your blood? If so, do you like any Irish folk or Irish rock/punk bands?

Finally, The Pogues are the main influence of today's two most well known Irish Rock/Punk bands, The Dropkick Murphy's and Flogging Molly. So if you like those bands, you will like The Pogues, too.

From what you said, you're probably right that she doesn't like them  . "Here Comes Your Man" is really catchy and I like it a lot, but I guess it's not really representative of what they're like.

Regarding the Pogues, I always heard the name but never listened to their music somehow. I listened to some snippets on iTunes right now and you can really tell they're Irish. I'm actually very familiar with a lot of the old Irish folk songs because I have a friend who sings in an Irish band. I'll definitely be giving the Pogues a serious listen :)

Besides Classical music I would have to say most of my listening falls in the Blues mainly the old delta blues style ( Sun House, Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf, Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Willie Johnson, John Lee Hocker just to name a few) also a fan of Sinatra as well as Johnny Cash.

MusicMan

I will have to check out what songs are on which Camera Obscura albums. Like I told you, my collection is a little scrambled. You will have to tell me which CD you want to listen to during our parties :D Yes, Ben Folds covered Bitches Ain't poopoo! (and I didn't edit it, you must have the censor thingie on). I put the link up above, give it a listen.

As for the Pixies........I have to admit I have never given them a GOOD listen. I just associate them with people in high school I didn't like that much, which is very stupid of me.....so I will youtube some of their songs later :)

I did enjoy Here Comes Your Man because of 500 Days of Summer, though :D (snickerss!)

I do have some Irish in my blood, but I have never particularly warmed to Irish bands for some reason, but I have only really heard the rock/punk bands, I guess. I can't stand Flogging Molly. Their music gives me a headache

I'm really surprised that people noticed this song enough to put it in a novel, or to do a cover of it. To me, it was a song I really liked in college that I thought just got lost in time. I never read that book, but I looked up the other songs from it and there are a lot of good ones, more of my favorites in fact.

MusicMan, I've listened to the Trespassers Willaim version several times now. You're right, it would be good for driving through a forest :) . It almost puts you in a trance, particularly the way it ends after the vocals are done.

Camera Obscura's "Lets Get Out of This Country" would be great to listen to during our parties, as well as their album "My Maudlin Career". I will help you get the music all situated when I get there.

I had no idea I have a censor thingy on my computer! As for those Ben Folds songs: is he serious?! Taking that Dr. Dre song and turning into a piano-type song, almost ballad-like, made me laugh really hard! A very good sense of humor, that's for sure.

Very neat that you're going to check out those Pixies songs I mentioned. Can't wait to hear what you think about those songs! If you like "Here Comes Your Man", you will probably like at least some of their other songs. Here's the condensed list of songs from my other post to check out on youtube:

Havalina (my favorite song of theirs!)
Into the White (the ending of this song rocks!)
Gigantic
Ana
Here Comes Your Man
Where is my Mind

Hey Snicks, I'm curious as to what you think of the Pogues, or if you've had more time to listen to them. I like to think I have a very sharp ear for music, and would never recommend a band on a thread like this without my complete backing. It takes some time to sort through their songs, but once you get them narrowed down on the ipod, it is an awesome collection of songs that always put me in a good mood.

A couple of other songs I really recommend of theirs is the surprising low key, but awesome tune, "A Rainy Night in Soho". That is an anthem I always listen to on my way home from the ranches. It has a strong "end of an era" type vibe to it, perfect for the "end of the trip" feeling I get when returning home from the ranches...

And there are some really good, old Irish folk songs. I like that song "Drink it up Men", by Luke Kelly. Very funny tune!

All right JT, another Pogues and Flogging Molly fan out there! And yeah, Dropkick Murphy's is a lot more "rough" and "loud", as compared to the Pogues.

And Johnny Cash is THE MAN. So many great tunes...

Hey Ruby, do you like both versions of "Vapour Trail"? I haven't read The Perk's of Being a Wildflower, but I'm assuming it's talking about the Ride version. The TW version has a little different feel to it, and even though it's not the original, is an amazing song...

Yeah man, that Trepassers William version makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, when I listen to it up in the mountains. And you described it perfectly: it puts you in a trance of beautiful sound, and the ending is magical and just plain "other worldly".

Okay, I just posted a lot about older type songs, so wanted to point out a song, and a band, that is fairly new - since that seems to be the main idea of Ruby's post in the first place. I mentioned this song before, but got lost in the shuffle of all the writing I've been doing on this thread (oops!).

Anyway, the song is "Bedroom Eyes" by the Dum Dum Girls. One of the better songs I've heard in a while! It's a great album too. Anybody else hear of this band, or this song? If I knew how to link to youtube, I would link it...

I know, right?

This isn't really music-music, I don't know if I'd listen to it on the way to work or anything, but there's a show on HBO called Flight of the Conchordes, and they have these musical numbers that are just hilarious! I don't know, maybe you've seen it, its pretty popular, but I know you don't watch a lot of TV. Here's a couple of the funnier numbers:

MusicMan

MusicMan, I haven't had a chance to give them a good listen yet. But I will! :) I do believe what you said and trust your recommendations

I'm posting the link below. My first impression of their look is that they're a cross between the Bangles and the women in the Robert Palmer videos

I'll have to listen to it a few more times before giving my opinion :)

Does it have to be new artists? Have you ever listened to Rod Stewarts Great American Songbook albums? They have him doing old standards like from Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Ira Gershwin along with doing duets of them with some pretty well known people. Frankly I think it's some of Rods best work.

Yes, Perks has some good music in it for sure. The book is a coming of age story for a teenager who is a little anti-social and has family problems, but it's VERY good. You should read it just because. It's a short read. I believe one of the most famous lines goes, "and in that moment, I swear we were infinite." Good book! I may reread it now haha.

[smilie=heart fill with love.gif]

MusicMan

Hahaha, isn't Ben Folds awesome?! I would marry him so fast! He's amazing! Unfortunately, he's already taken :( He's on his third or fourth marriage!

I will start compiling a playlist for Camera Obscura. I will probably end up buying a few more albums! :D

MusicMan, this is one of my favorite songs of all time, although for me it was the original by Ride in 1990. It's peppier than the TW version, for lack of a better word, but I think it also has a magical and other worldly feel to it. Here's a link to the video. I don't know why it's trademarked in 2005.

Hey Ruby, do you like both versions of "Vapour Trail"? I haven't read The Perk's of Being a Wildflower, but I'm assuming it's talking about the Ride version. The TW version has a little different feel to it, and even though it's not the original, is an amazing song...

MusicMan

I'm pretty sure that Perks has the TW version.......but I could be wrong. I will check out the Ride version!

So I just bought tickets for Florence + the Machine since they are coming to Reno in April. Has anyone heard of them and/or like them? Two of my favorite (popular) songs of theirs:

I am really digging Calvin Harris right now. Especially this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGghkjpNCQ8&ob=av2e

Also, I'm in love with this song by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHEOF_rcND8&ob=av2n

"Well holy moly, me oh my, you're the apple of my eye! Girl, I've never loved one like you."

Turn me on to something new!

I haven't listened to a lot of Florence + The Machine, but I love Dog Days are Over - I'm glad you turned me back on to them because I forgot who sang that song.

That's too bad that Flogging Molly gives you a headache! The Pogues are a lot more "smooth" and "musical" than Flogging Molly. But yeah, Irish music is not everybody's cup of tea...

It's just very rowdy and I'm not sure I like the accent when it comes to music. I'm so weird! I should be embracing that music! What a bad Irish woman I am!

[smilie=heart fill with love.gif]

Geesh Ruby, I just suggested and named the top three Irish bands of all time, and you pretty much dissed them all! You're right, what kind of an Irish woman are you?!!!

Okay, so now that it's been established that Irish music is completely off your radar(!), what about reggae music? Do you like any reggae music? For newer reggae bands, Midnite is the best out there right now, but not many people have heard of them...their first two albums, "Unpolished" and "Ras Mek Peace" are incredible albums.

Any Ben Folds fans out there? or....Ke$ha? ;)

Here is a remake Ben Folds did for Ke$ha's song "Sleazy"

Take a listen. It's pretty amazing.

Also, Ben Folds covered Bitches Ain't poopoo by Dr. Dre

Both are so good!!!! I would marry Ben Folds in a quick minute. His piano skills are out of this world.

Isn't he a judge on a show? I can't think of the name of it.

Hi Ruby,

I really liked the selections Of Monsters and Men. Had not heard them before. Going to check them out more.

Have you heard any songs by Ani DiFranco? She's an indie, even produces and distributes here own music. Folksinger, blues, soul, funk, sharp wit, edgy lyrics. I love her music. :D

SHY http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1420a_ani-difranco-shy-clip_music

...and now for something completely different.... Have you heard of Die Antwoord? They are a bit bizarre, and profane. From Wilipedia: "Die Antwoord (Afrikaans for "The Answer") is a South African rap-rave group whose style draws from the Zef counter-culture movement. Its members are Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er as lead vocalists, with tracks by DJ Hi-Tek" Kids these days, I'm telling ya....

Spoiler Alert: The video has rats, bugs, bad teeth, and some foul language in it. OK, I warned you.

Ruby, these Monsters of Men songs are awesome tunes! Very real, authentic music...I like it! One of the better band recommendations I've heard since Camera Obscura was recommended to me in 2006.

I already checked some more Monsters of Men tunes on Itunes, and songs like Mountain of Sound and Lakehouse are really good too, among others. I'm going to have to download some songs, it's always good to have new tunes to listen to during my flight out to Reno, like I will be doing next month.

Thanks for the heads up in the chat room last night to check these songs out. You got a good ear for music! And seriously, as with Camera Obscura, these songs just seem to have "The Ruby Vibe" all about them! :D

I have a feeling this music will be new to most people. It's baroque opera!

A little history about this particular piece: it is almost unperformable by modern singers (the singer in the link is one of the only people who can currently perform it). It was written in 1730 by the composer Riccardo Broschi and was stolen five years later by Vivaldi, who used it in one of his operas. It was originally composed for the castrato voice, but after Vivaldi plagiarized it, he cast a woman in order to prove that the female voice was also up to the task. Enjoy!

I think that you would be also dig the band Stars, MM. They remind me of Monsters of Men, so if you liked that, you will probably like them.

Here are some of their songs that I like:

Stars - Take Me to the Riot

Your Ex-Lover is Dead

Stars - Elevator Love Letter

Stars - The Night Starts Here

They are a little more.....weird.....but I like weird :) and I love Lakehouse by Monsters of Men!

OK Ruby, while it's not music it's adventure of sorts. In Atlanta Georga they have a thing that runs in October called the Zombie Accomplished It is an abandoned truck stop that has been converted into a zombie hunting ground. You can pay to go through the various corridors and offices and be chased by zombies, or for a few bucks more, you can don motocross armour and goggles, and load up with the paintball maching gun of your choice and go stalk tje brain eaters. Great wholsome fun for the entire family and you can be part of it.

Neko Case shuffled up on my iPod tonight and I immediately thought of you!! When I went to check out if she was still here in Chicago, and I read on her Wikipedia she lived in the Northwest too!!

She has LOTS of stuff, so I picked a "Top Tracks For Neko Case" from YouTube. I think I have most of her stuff around here

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=AL ... TeGKoBHAUu

Or if you just want one to get an idea:

Star Witness

PLUS she's a redhead! LOL!

p.s. Going to see Alicia Witt tomorrow night! So excited! (Maybe this should be in "Everything Redhead"!)

Hey Ruby, thanks for linking these songs, even though they are more "weird", LOL! I too like weird (and must say I have some weird-type songs written myself!), and I enjoyed these songs. :D

And I'm still digging Of Monsters and Men, too!

By the way, you're are on a roll with recommending bands. Keep those recommendations coming, and thanks again for the heads up on these bands! :D

you're making me swoon Ruby, recommending a Canadian Indie like you are.
I've been listening to and loving Stars for a few years now.

Haha, that's funny you posted that because I was just looking at that a few weeks ago! So awesome! For any Walking Dead fan, that is a must see attraction :D I want to go!

These two songs are not new, but.....the tunes are catchy!!! :D

If you like New York City, Tiffany's, and Audrey... (sorry for the lead VEVO advertisment)

Deep Blue Something - "Breakfast at Tiffany's"
Too bad it's a break-up song :-(

If you like karaoke, cute girl auto mechanics, hula hoops, or sometimes imagine girlfriends and boyfriends naked in public settings....

The Dandy Warhols - "Bohemian Like You"
WHOA HO WOO... AND I LIKE YOU YEAH I LIKE YOU....
[smilie=hot over you.gif]

It would be fun if the LRN Lovers did a lip-dub video like this one sometime!!!

Oooo bringing out the nineties with Deep Blue Something! That's a really good song, but actually has nothing to really do with Audrey, New York, etc. The song is about a couple who has absolutely nothing in common and is falling apart fast.....the only thing they do have in common is that they both liked Breakfast at Tiffany's :) Gooooood song! I have definitely related to that a few times.

As for Bohemian Like You, I have heard that before and forgot how much I liked it! Thank you for reminding me

You have good taste in music from what I can see!
