Get to the Bunnyranch faster!!!! New Freeway !!!

The final stretch of freeway linking Reno to Carson City should be open to traffic in about two months as Northern Nevada’s largest road project nears completion.

Over the past five years, crews have carved the ribbon of concrete into the hills west of Pleasant and Steamboat valleys, while the project’s centerpiece — the massive Galena Creek Bridge — gradually took its towering shape.

Concrete is poured on all but about 2 miles of the roadway, with the remainder to be done during a 10-day project set to begin today.

It’s all coming together.

“It’s the last big push,” said Brad Durski, the project manager for the Nevada Department of Transportation. “It’s crazy right now. We’re seven days a week, day and night.”

If all goes as planned, the 8.5-mile-long Interstate 580 freeway will open to cars and trucks in late July. The final phase of work, an interchange near Bower’s Mansion, should be done in late September.

Details are still being finalized, but a public celebration is planned for a Saturday in mid-July.

“Thousands of bikers” will have the opportunity to pedal the length of the project in an event that will also likely include a fun run and an opportunity for motorists to drive the road, NDOT spokesman Scott Magruder said.

Not everything about the $555 million project has offered something to celebrate.

Initial work started in 2003 when Wisconsin-based Edward Kraemer & Sons began building the Galena Creek Bridge — at 300 feet high, 1,700 feet long and with a 700-foot-long supporting arch — the largest structure of its kind.

The company abruptly halted work in 2006, claiming that as designed by state engineers, the massive bridge posed a safety hazard. Contractors expressed concern that during a particularly vulnerable point in the bridge’s construction, it could “buckle and fail” if hit by high winds common in the area.

NDOT engineers disputed those concerns, but state officials ultimately decided a lengthy court battle was not worth the time and money. In June 2006, the state transportation board paid Edward Kraemer & Sons $50 million for work already completed and terminated its contract with the firm.

Later that year, the board awarded a $393 million construction contract to North Dakota-based Fisher Industries Inc. to finish the bridge and build the rest of the freeway. The bridge is being erected by subcontractor C.C. Myers in a way different than originally envisioned by state engineers.

The new contract added about $113 million to the project’s cost.

Fisher Industries started work the following year and the project’s next significant problem soon arose. Unexpected geologic conditions meant rock the company had planned on using for road-building materials wasn’t available, prompting the firm to ask for more money. NDOT refused and the matter went to a “dispute resolution board” that ultimately ruled in Fisher’s favor, adding about $20 million to the project’s cost. In all, about $32 million in change orders were approved over the last five years.

Another problem surfaced in March 2010 when a series of cracks up to 30 feet long were found in four areas of the bridge. The cracks occurred during testing of some corrugated metal pipes that serve as part of the bridge’s internal support. Fixing the problem cost close to $1 million. In January, a wildfire burning through Pleasant Valley jumped the freeway twice but caused no damage.

Overall, work has proceeded smoothly over the last two years as the project neared its final stages, Durski said.

“We’re getting there. It’s coming along,” Durski said.

Once opened, the freeway is expected to shave up to eight minutes of travel time from what it takes to drive the current U.S. 395 through Pleasant Valley — a road that is the site of frequent and severe traffic collisions. The freeway will be three lanes in each direction with a speed limit of 65 mph.

“It’s about reducing congestion, it’s about safety and it’s about having a continuous interstate,” Magruder said. “The capital will be connected to Reno, and that’s important.”

HIway 395 and hi way 580 are the same hiway that leads to the bunnyranch!!! see you soon!

This is a wonderful project for all the people, business including the Bunny Ranch and Love Ranch. They have spend a lot of money but for sure will bring extra traffic and new business for the area.

I always enjoy the trip from Reno to Carson City because at the end is the warm embrace of the Bunnies and Lovers. The scenery is nice too.

I remember hearing that freeway was suppose to go in 15-20 years ago. So it finally happen, no more scenic route.

Awww I think that is really sweet and cute and shows how down to earth you really are it also makes anyone who hasn't been there less nervous too. I also think it's special that no matter how many times I come to see you you still give me butterflies because your parties keep getting HOTTER [smilie=hot over you.gif]

It's almost done, I saw the huge bridge and it's weird to see such a stunning bridge in nevada. I am a native to nevada and that bridge was a sight to see.
