Oh brother. If you want to lose weight, and are dieting and exercising, you need to be drinking water, not soda. http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/14/health/coke-obesity/index.html

Every time schools try to get rid of soft drinks in vending machines and replace them with healthier drinks, there's a battle. But it really starts at an early age. If kids are conditioned to sip on Cokes and eat Big Macs with a side of fries, the fight against obesity will remain a steep uphill climb.

Yes there is enormous amounts of sugar in soda, sometimes up to 27 grams. It's good to keep in mind that 1 teaspoon equals 3 grams, so that would be putting 8 to 9 teaspoons of super down your mouth!! Generally I look at labels and try to stay away from things over 10 grams sugar per serving, 15 grams tops. If you like orange juice drink Trop 50 that has low sugar I guess they don't add sugar.

I agree. It's common sense really... too much calorie intake + not enough exercise = obesity.

I realized that when it came to things like Coke, what I really liked was the carbonation, so I developed a taste for mineral water. You get the carbonation and when they add fruit essence it still doesn't bump up the calories, and no sugar! ![Heart fill with love [smilie=heart fill with love.gif]](./chat_old/images/smilies/Heart fill with love.gif)

A starting note, I am not a health care professional and this is coming from my personal experience and research.
Getting to being healthy from an unhealthy place, needs both exercise and diet. But, not dieting. Dieting suggests a temporary change. It is about making healthy eating choices and exercise a regular part of your life; It needs to be a choice you make to change your lifestyle.
I had high cholesterol and was obese. My doctor was concerned I was pre-diabetic. I made a choice to exercise daily, and change my diet. Now, I am at an ideal weight for my body, my cholesterol is much better (this is partly genetic) and my doctor is no longer concerned about diabetes. I feel much better. It is about making a lifestyle change. One of the big changes I made was to flip my diet. My breakfast is the biggest meal of the day (Oatmeal with 2 bananas sliced into it with a small handful of raisins, soy latte and orange juice). That way I have all day to burn it off. When you eat a big dinner and no/minimal breakfast, your body holds on to it, because you aren't usually all that active at night. Whereas in the morning you have all day to burn it off. Beef is an occasional pleasure, not a regular part of my diet. I go for lean meats, seafood and eat more vegetables, fruits, grains and nuts.
There are a number of factors that lead to obesity. For some it is genetic. There is growing evidence that it can also be caused by the bacteria in your digestive track. I recent study cataloged the bacteria in the digestive tracks of two identical twins one of whom never had weight problems while the other had them her from an early age. Another study showed, in rats, a particular bacteria would cause the intestines to swell and not properly absorb nutrients. So there are still a number of factors that are outside of our control. Any weight loss program should be discussed with your doctor before you begin.

Obesity means having too much body fat. It is different from being overweight, which means weighing too much. The weight may come from muscle, bone, fat, and/or body water. Both terms mean that a person's weight is greater than what's considered healthy for his or her height.
Obesity occurs over time when you eat more calories than you use. The balance between calories-in and calories-out differs for each person. Factors that might affect your weight include your genetic makeup, overeating, eating high-fat foods, and not being physically active.
Being obese increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and some cancers. If you are obese, losing even 5 to 10 percent of your weight can delay or prevent some of these diseases. For example, that means losing 10 to 20 pounds if you weigh 200 pounds.

I do the same thing. Sugar is not my friend. I have to watch having too much of it.

True but every now and I again I crave a Coke, though Pepsi will do too. Forget Mountain Dew, that stuff will keep me awake for days

On the ingredients label look for High Fructose Corn Syrup. This substance your body doesn't easily process so in turn gets stored as fat. Look at Pancake Syrups, Catsup, Jams and jelly's, coke's, root beer's, Mayonnaise.
